Downsize HUD — Make FHA independent

The FHA is now part of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, however it wasn’t always this way. FHA started out as an independent agency in 1934 under Franklin Roosevelt. HUD was formed in 1965 under Lyndon Johnson.

Given that the government is forever re-organizing, perhaps it’s time to downsize HUD. After all, what additional value does HUD bring to FHA? More costs. More bureaucracy. How are these good things?

FHA operated independently for more than 30 years and did a lot of good for many people. It still does a lot of good, but the cashspend on excess layers of administration is simply money that could be better used helping more people to buy more homes.
